This post is about an ancient village that was built on one of the "terpens" - dwelling mounds.  This plaque says that the mound was built around the same time as Dokkum, approximately 600 B.C.

This picture clearly shows where a large portion of the mound was excavated in later years, because the soil in North Friesland is sandy and the soil in the terpens was very rich, so it was spread around to make agricultural land.  You can see the church spire at the top, in the background.

Here is one view of the church.  Obviously, it went through one or two additions or renovations.

The tower holds the bell, and underneath is the front entrance.  Graves cover the ground around the church.  Grietje told me about an old superstitious custom for funerals.  After the funeral service, the coffin was carried out the front door and with the mourners walking behind it, it was carried all around the church, back to the front door again, and after that it was taken to its final resting place.  This was to confuse evil spirits who might be lurking around, waiting to take possession of the dead body.

I know I showed you this picture before, but wanted to show it again, because these homes are part of the village on this terpen.
